PEOPLE'S INVESTMENT
John Wooden said "You can't live a perfect day until you do something for someone who will never be able to repay you."
Chief Moshood Kasimawo Olawale Abiola was unarguably one of the most successful entrepreneurs of the 20th century in Africa. His business empire included Abiola Farms, Abiola bookshops, Radio Communications Nigeria, Wonder bakeries, Concord Press, Concord Airlines, Summit oil international ltd, Africa Ocean lines, Habib Bank, Decca W.A. ltd, and Abiola football club amongst others.
Apart from being a serial entrepreneur, a publisher, and a politician, Chief MKO Abiola was also a philanthropist of great repute. His financial assistance resulted in the construction of 63 secondary schools, 121 mosques and churches, 41 libraries, 21 water projects in 24 states of Nigeria, and was grand patron to 149 societies or associations in Nigeria and above all, he personally invested in people. Recently, I was in a meeting when an elderly friend informed us how Chief Abiola helped him when they were together in London, in 1992.
Despite, Chief Abiola stupendous wealth and myriad of companies, the only thing that stood the test of time was the people he helped to become successful during his lifetime. Every other things were now in oblivion. Deep! At least, I know 2 highly successful and respected Nigerians that were products of his benevolence.
Your Excellency, achieving our dreams is one of the things that can give us a sense of accomplishments in our lifetime, but helping others to achieve their dreams will guarantee us fulfilment and meaning, sometimes beyond our life-time.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. I think most of the things we presently see or feel as personal achievements are small compared to what we can do for others and humanity. I know some of my revered readers are currently doing this, my challenge for us today is we can do more. Who is that person that I've shown promise and determination to succeed that we can lift up and give support to climb the ladder of success? Maybe a family member, a friend, a brother or even an employee?
I know today's write up, will only be properly understood by men and women who are firmly rooted in knowledge. It's for the matured mind. The greatest gift you can or should give to people is the gift they will or shouldn't come back to thank you but rather the world. You will succeed
